I have been meaning to post this for ages– since before I left Canada, actually. But, without my computer while LHR and I hiked over hill and dale (quite literally) along the gobsmackingly gorgeous Dorset coast, then back in London and busy seeing the sights with my mum, I have not had time.
Here is Hat #4, the final project in my millinery course:
I made it from an inherited hat from my generous MIL– the original plan was for a cloche, but once blocked, that shape just wasn’t for me. At all. So I re-blocked it and went with a cute little cocktail hat with a tiny point on top– a very early-50s shape. I used the vintage grosgrain from the original hat to bind the wire to the edge (after trying two other types of ribbon that just did not look as good), and abandoned the original idea for either a bunch of vintage cherries (couldn’t find any) or a series of leaves on top (looked like an African violet had sprouted on my head and totally obscured the shape of the hat) in favour of using the French netting I bought way back in the planning stage for Hat #1.
The plan was to wear it with the French netting at the back, but my dear mum, who puts every single hat I make on her own head BACKWARDS, discovered that this one actually looks good worn either way. In fact, I think I prefer it “backwards.”
I can’t wait to wear this hat!
(Apologies for the lame post title– I cannot think of a single song about “backwards” and could only come up with the whole “play Stairway to Heaven backwards” thing that was big when I was about 11 years old. No, there are no satanic messages hidden in this post or elsewhere on this blog. Sorry if that disappoints anyone out there.)

beautiful. my favourite.
