It’s March Break! (cue sound of angels singing) Which means a LOT of errands. Which means comfy shoes.

idareyouThe first time I wore these shoes, no one said a word about them. Not one person. Not one word. It freaked me out a bit. I mean, they sort of make a statement, don’t you think? I thought the statement they were making was along the lines of, “Holy crap! COOL.” But then, when no one had anything to say about them, I began to wonder whether what they were really saying was, “The woman wearing these is a certifiable fashion victim.”
In the end, I decided I didn’t care because what matters is what  think and I still think they rock.

I wear them all the time.

It was love at first sight for me when I saw these shoes. After all, they are an unholy marriage of all that I love: patent leather, Oxford brogues, black & white, STUDS! And I was not deterred at all to learn that the person behind them (okay, maybe it’s just her money is behind them) is none other than Madonna.

That’s right, Gentle Reader, my shoes are by Madge.
The line is called “Truth or Dare.”

YYZ: True Colours

I see your true colours, shining through….

Friday’s outfit was a hit, particularly with the students. Several of them pointed out that they have the same skirt, but in white. I know this news should worry me more than it does…
Thank god they have to wear uniforms to school and I never have to see how much better the dang skirt looks on someone whose age (and legs!) are better-suited to it.

Blouse & Skirt: Zara, purchased on two different continents!
Tights: 9 West
Shoes: Le Chateau
Belt: um, Ardene?

In other news, have you read this yet? Similar to the Harry Potter franchise, it is a YA trilogy. Unlike this garbage, it contains nary a grammatical error, is well-written and the soap-operatic elements are rendered with a lighter hand and thus, not nausea-inducing. It is unabashedly plot-driven; unlike the aforementioned dreck, it doesn’t pretend to be about character development. Instead, it is a literary juggernaut.
Oh, also, it is insanely violent.
I defy you to put it down once you start reading!

May the odds be ever in your favour…

Hi, Interweb. Happy New Year! Sorry for the absence (did you notice?), but things got a wee bit crazy around here.

LHR was here for a few wonderful days– yay!– and so we did what we do best: we ate, we drank and, of course, we shopped. Man, did we ever shop! I blame LHR and her quest for the perfect black boots. (‘Cause it’s nice to have someone to blame… 🙂 )  She found them and will, no doubt, post them soon!

In the meantime, I have this outfit for you. M’s family is coming for dinner today, so this is Casual Hosting At Home. It is also Mutton-Dressed-As-Lamb.

Lace Top:  Zara
Cami (under lace top): Smart Set
RED Jeans: H&M
Wooden Bangles: Top Shop
Shoes: Rodarte, Opening Ceremony (oh, yes I DID!)

Okay, Interweb, before I go, I have a Very Important Question for you. What the HELL should I do with the horror that is my hair??? I like it for about 2 days when it is first coloured– it’s pale and icy and funky I feel quite fashion-y. Then it starts to go brassy. The roots, which were the impetus behind this colour change, are much better, as they just look dark, rather than black-and-white when they start to grow back. But I just feel a little too much like this most days. (Thanks, M, for putting the image into my head, whence it can now never be expunged. Helpful.) And I wonder if it might not be better to commit to some darker, more me-ish colour and just spend a couple of hours every other week touching up the roots with drug store hair colour….  Please give me your suggestions for a new hair colour in the comments below. Thanks, Interweb!

Rock and Roll! (Or, "Birthday Girl Channels Inner Coug"!)

Well, it’s my birthday, too!

For the first time in many years, LHR and I celebrated our birthdays (we are 3 days apart) together.
In New York!

LHR met me after work and we headed up to Harlem to celebrate my birthday at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. The evening did not disappoint, though the actual show was not quite as entertaining as the last time I attended Amateur Night at the Apollo; we saw the final show of the competition, so the acts were not as diverse as they are earlier in the competition and The Executioner* only made one appearance.
(We think he should have made at least two…)

*check out the other videos at that link to get a real sense of why we might have wanted to see more of The Exectutioner and his fantastic moves!

Here is what I wore:

T-shirt: H&M
(purchased in NYC because I brought WARM clothes with me and the weather was HOT!)
Leggings: Nicole Miller
Belt: H&M (purchased in London)
Shoes: Adrienne Vittadini

For LHR’s birthday we gussied up and headed out for rooftop cocktails at the Hotel Gansevoort and then over to Son Cubano.  By this point in the trip, we had been joined by YVR and YSN,
who rose above their jet-lag to sight-see and shop like troopers!

No individual shot of YSN- she got too caught up in her own camera's auto function to have time to pose for a photo! LOL

No, that is not a maternity top I am wearing… ;P

I can only tell you that LHR is wearing a skirt I made her buy on a visit to T.O. a few Christmases back
(um, hello? Can you see how great she looks in it? OF COURSE I made her buy it!),
YSN is sporting a top she purchased the day before on a very successful visit to Anthropologie,
YVR is wearing a silk shirt and some groovy boots that made us all envious of their respective gorgeousness and that I am wearing the following:

Top & Bedazzled Cuff: H&M
Skirt: Jacob
Shoes: Adrienne Vittadini
(Not the ideal shoe choice for this outfit, but a week of pounding the NYC pavement meant that my right foot was just not up to the proper shoes for the outfit– too tall for the Foot-Formerly-Known-As-Broken.)

I can safely say that an amazing time was had by all.
Thanks, LHR, for making it all possible!

Girls, this one’s for you:

With love from me and my shoelace.

I don’t mean to gloat, but……I AM ON SABBATICAL!*
And the past two days have been highly instructive:
Is this how normal people live????
I am talking about being able to commit 100% to whatever it is you are doing, IN THE MOMENT, rather than feeling perpetually as though you should be working; feeling guilty/resentful because every single second you spend doing something that is NOT the work that is waiting for you is a second you are going to regret later because it means it will take you that much longer to DO the pile of work lurking somewhere in your house or computer??? Seriously, folks, if word gets out that it is possible to actually enjoy life, guilt- and resentment-free,  the education system (and maybe the entire world!)  as we know it is going to crumble as teachers (and other professionals) everywhere up and quit their jobs.

On to the outfit part of the blog. 🙂 NOT GOOD today– sorry about that!

Hoooooooo BOY! Trying to get a decent shot was NOT easy today! The problem is a combination unflattering-dress-6-weeks-without-ANY-exercise situation. Ouch.

BUT, I wanted to document the BOOTLESSNESS! Since Wednesday, I have been (mostly) Frank-free! And I am now allowed to drive, so although I limp and lurch, life is returning to a kind of normalcy. I may even try going for a walk tomorrow.

Dress: BAD purchase at Anthropologie in NYC with my mum. The Canadian dollar was at par and the dress was on the sale rack and it was just NOT a good idea. Too short, too broad, too young.
Earrings: Hmmm. Somewhere in the Sufferin’ Mall.
ShoeS: Softmoc

TOO SHORT in the back!

High humidity + growing hair longer = drastic hairstyle measures.

I will need my hair to be longer for my upcoming travels– easier, lower maintenance, may help me deal with the damp in London (humidity of any sort is NOT  a friend to my hair-type, alas!).
So, here you see a return to my standard “350”– 3 hairpins and 50 pounds of hairspray.

*How sick is it that I still LOVE Madonna’s outfit and want to wear it? AGAIN. 🙂

YYZ: Blue Bayou

Another warm day (25 degrees Celsius!) but legs still too terrifying to reveal.
I am working on it– thank you, Jergens fake bake moisturizing mousse!– but we have a long way to go yet. Solution? Footless tights!

Silk/cotton Blouse: Club Monaco
Shrug: Smart Set
Skirt, Cuff, Earrings: H&M
Belt: Ardene
Footless Tights: Nordstrom
Shoes (utterly invisible in these shots…): Le Chateau

Pathetic camera skills = camera set to zoom, thereby cutting off my legs...

This is not what I had planned to wear. But the dress I wanted to wear is, erm, rather snug at the moment and I basically looked like a sausage tied in the middle, so I had to take emergency measures at the last minute. As is usually the case in these situations, I ended up changing my entire outfit. I hate the final result, but I had no time to change, so I had to head for work wearing a too-trampy, too young, style-challenged get-up that can only be described as what my students would call a “total fail.”

There is nothing about this outfit I like, even though I like many of the components on their own.
Nope. Not at all.

Dress: Costa Blanca
Belt: Jessica Simpson
Tights: I can’t remember the brand, but I got them at Winners.
Cami: Smart Set
Cuff: H&M
Headband (worn as a choker) & Shoes: Le Chateau
